Will Canon Release a Large Number of Camera Bodies in 2022?

2022 is scheduled to be “The Year of the Camera Body” from Canon. At the time of writing, most major releases will happen in the 2nd half of 2022.

Here are what we can expect from Canon in 2022:

Canon EOS R5C: a video-oriented version of the Canon EOS R5 with a number of upgrades – including unlimited 8K30P recording in Cinema RAW Light, an active cooling system for “unlimited 8K 30p”, the 21-pin Mult-Function Shoe debuted on the Canon EOS R3, a full-size HDMI port and the Canon Log 2 profile. The official announcement will be in mid-January 2022.

Two new entry-level full frame RF bodies: Canon is apparently planning to release two new cameras to update the the Canon EOS R and the Canon EOS RP. The first body will be “the most affordable full-frame camera Canon has ever made” and the second will slot between the EOS RP replacement and the current Canon EOS R6. While pricing is obviously not known yet, Canon Rumors speculates that these bodies could be priced at $899 and $1,499 respectively.

Canon EOS R7: The Canon EOS R7 will be an APS-C format RF mount mirrorless camera and it is already undergoing testing in the wild by a select group of photographers. The source claims that the new APS-C RF mount camera will be “directly aimed at sports, wildlife and videography”, to replace the Canon EOS 7D Mark II? Canon EOS R5S: A high-resolution EOS R5 type body. The Canon EOS R5S high-megapixel camera is now being tested by a very select group of photographers as a finished product, and it will feature a new 90MP sensor, which “just about doubles” the 45MP sensor of the Canon EOS R5. This high-megapixel Canon EOS R5S body will be squarely aimed at still photographers. If you love recording videos or making movies, you will probably like the Canon EOS R5 or the Canon EOS R6.

Canon EOS R1: A flagship RF mount camera. The Canon EOS R1, the RF mount mirrorless version of the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III, is currently under development which will be aimed at professional sports and wildlife photographers.
