Canon Roadmap 2021: What Can We Expect from Canon in 2021?

Last year was a difficult year for the world, and Canon released many consumer mirrorless cameras and DSLR cameras in 2020:

So, what’s coming next? what’s the Canon roadmap in 2021? What can we expect from Canon in 2021?

Here is the full list of the upcoming Canon cameras in 2021 (via Camera Times):

Canon EOS-R1

A flagship RF mount camera. The Canon EOS R1, the RF mount mirrorless version of the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III, is currently under development which will be aimed at professional sports and wildlife photographers. The official announcement will be ahead of the Tokyo Olympics this summer.

Canon EOS R5S

A high-resolution EOS R5 type body. The Canon EOS R5S high-megapixel camera is now being tested by a very select group of photographers as a finished product, and it will feature a new 90MP sensor, which “just about doubles” the 45MP sensor of the Canon EOS R5. This high-megapixel Canon EOS R5S body will be squarely aimed at still photographers. If you love recording videos or making movies, you will probably like the Canon EOS R5 or the Canon EOS R6.

Canon EOS R7 APS-C RF-Mount Mirrorless Camera

It seems that Canon will give up spending more resources developing the Canon EOS M series cameras, and 2021 will be the last year for the Canon EOS M lineup. The Canon EOS R7 will be an APS-C format RF mount mirrorless camera and it is already undergoing testing in the wild by a select group of photographers. The official announcement will probably be in August – September 2021. The source claims that the new APS-C RF mount camera will be “directly aimed at sports, wildlife and videography”, to replace the Canon EOS 7D Mark II? You can also see the Canon EOS R7 rumored specifications here.

Two new entry-level full frame RF bodies

Canon is apparently planning to release two new cameras to update the the Canon EOS R and the Canon EOS RP. The first body will be “the most affordable full-frame camera Canon has ever made” and the second will slot between the EOS RP replacement and the current Canon EOS R6. While pricing is obviously not known yet, Canon Rumors speculates that these bodies could be priced at $899 and $1,499 respectively.

Canon Cinema EOS C50

The Canon EOS C50 cinema camera will probably to be announced in the first half of 2021. The details on this upcoming cinema camera are still unknown at the time of writing, but it is rumored to utilize a box camera design.

Canon Cinema EOS C90

Similarly to the Canon EOS C50, there’s very little information on this Canon EOS C90 cinema camera. However, it seems that we should be expecting it to appear in sometime 2021.

Canon EOS 8K Cinema Camera

Canon Japan has released a teaser for an 8K EOS Cinema camera, which is expected to be announced in 2021 along with another 8K Cinema EOS camera. We already reported that Canon is currently working on two new 8K Cinema EOS cameras. One will be a flagship camera with “A camera” aspirations, just like the the Canon Cinema EOS C700, while the other is a modular camera with the similar positioning to the Cinema EOS C300 Mark III and Cinema EOS C500 Mark II. The two Canon 8K Cinema EOS cameras are expected to be announced around the NAB 2021 in April.

The Canon EOS R5 and Canon EOS R6 are selling like hot cakes. So, if you are interested or want to get as far to the front of the list as you can, you should probably go ahead and pre-order now.
